In the US, most water supplies are checked constantly. If they violate any standards, they have to notify all their customers. If you are talking about tap water from a private well, most states have water quality departments that can analyze any water, usually for a fee.
The easiest way to do this is to request a copy of the annual water quality report if your home is served by a community water service. The report will tell you if there are contaminants in your drinking water, and in what proportion. Further testing may be done at your discretion. The second source is a link to state certification officers, who can get you in contact with a certified lab to test your water.
