Yes, there are modern elevator designs that use less energy than others. Some elevators are fitted with counterweights that offset the the weight of the cab and passengers, which allows gravity to do some of the work thus saving power. Others are equipped with regenerative drives that capture some of the heat elevators create and send it back to the building’s electrical system. There are also programs that control things like wait time, lighting, and fan operations to help save energy. Some of these new elevator designs can save between 50 and 70 percent of energy over traditional elevators.
