Amtrak can take passengers 3,500 miles from Washington, DC to San Francisco, CA. Take a look at their website for their recommendations for making the long trip into a series of shorter events aimed at national sight-seeing.
Amtrak does not offer direct routes coast-to-coast, but you can create a cross-country rail trip with a few transfers. For example, the Lake Shore Limited line will take you from New York, NY to Chicago, IL. You could then transfer to the Southwest Chief line in Chicago, which goes all the way to Los Angeles, CA. All east-coast Amtrak routes have connections in either Chicago or New Orleans that allow transfers to lines that go to Seattle, Portland, San Francisco/Oakland, L.A., and San Diego, and many points in between.
