Wind speed is measure with a device called an “anemometer”.
There are different types of anemometers, however a common device that you may have seen is a series of wind-cups attached to a rotating vertical pole. When the wind blows, it is caught in the cups and begins to spin. There is a sensor inside the device that measures how quickly the pole is spinning, thereby making it possible to determine the velocity of the wind.
