Is there a threshold of carbon in our atmosphere?

Many groups believe that the safest upper limit carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is 350 parts per million. We are currently at 390 ppm. It seems that the worst case scenario threshold is around 550 ppm. After 550 many of earths processes could fall apart and cause real catastrophic problems for all the organisms on earth. Lets try to avoid that one.
