There are currently no active tidal energy sites in the U.S., although several locations are being considered for experimental tidal plants. Offshore wind energy is another sensitive subject – many proposed sites for offshore wind have created controversy from concerned tourist and environmental groups.
While it might seem to make sense to combine tidal and wind power on the same site, that idea may have to wait until each technology is established on its own. A limiting factor may be water depth – it is difficult to install wind turbines in deep water, and tidal power plants will most likely require depths of a few hundred feet to generate a sufficient amount of electricity.
