Apple stem cells are being used in a new form of anti-aging treatments for human skin. These particular stem cells from from a certain apple cultivar, the Uttwiler Spätlaube, that has a long shelf life. By combining stem cells from the fruit with medical-grade oxygen, scientists were able to create an anti-aging face cream. The stem cells are beneficial because just like human stem cells they are capable of regenerating new cells, and help aging skin maintain elasticity that is lost over time.
Stem cells are biological cells found in all muticellular organisms that can divide through mitosis and differentiate into diverse specialized cell types or can self renew to produce more stem cells.
Plant stem cells are innately undifferentiated cells located in the meristems of plants. Plant stem cells serve as the origin of plant vitality as they maintain themselves while providing a steady supply of precursor cells to form differentiated tissues and organs in plants.
I have been unable to find a peer-reviewed scientific journal that shows that plant stem cells can currently provide any benefits, however I did find an article dicussing some new research into how plants can produce and store compounds that can prevent human disease and attempting to transfer that ability into staple food crops. As well as researching how to define the genetic cues that cause stem cells to become specialized cells in plants, which may one day lead to new ways to treat intractable diseases, such as Parkinson’s or some forms of cancer, without the ethical issues involved in human stem cell research.
I don’t know about apple stem cells, but did you know that apple seeds have a derivitive of cyanide, and if you eat them, that cyanide derivitive will attach itself to cancer cells (everybody has them) in your body and kill them?
