Based on a report from April 2012, the Fukushima power plant is far from being a safe location. Lots of irradiated nuclear fuel remains stored in fuel pools where they are very vulnerable to future earthquakes. The loss of water in these pools would lead to massive overheating and ignition of the zirconium metal cladding that contains the irradiated fuel. This could cause a fire that would deposit highly dangerous radioactive material over several hundreds of miles.
