Is there some sort of food surplus or storage facility in the United States?

Although this is not confirmed, there is said to be a food storage facility underground in Carthridge, MO that is operated by the U.S. military. There are claims that Americold is the corporation that has been contracted by the U.S. government to build this facility. Americold (2011) specializes in temperature-controlled warehousing and logistics to the food industry. There is very little information available to confirm the existence of this food storage facility and what it is being used for.

Due to America’s capitalist system, responsibility for food storage is left in the hands of corporations and individuals who feel that it is important. Some Americans pay thousands of dollars for bomb shelters complete with stores of non-perishable food. Bomb shelters were particularly popular during the cold war, and have been immortalized in several works of fiction. I recently read one that was published in the August 1985 issue of Issac Asimov science fiction magazine. It is called “On for the long haul” by Coraghessan Boyle.
