Perhaps the most significant problem with storing nuclear waste is that, even if we do find a way to store it safely for the moment, radioactive material remains dangerous for so long that there is no way to guarantee it will remain safe indefinitely. In some cases, high-level nuclear waste remains radioactive for sometimes more than 100,000 years. This, of course, is many times longer than human history up to this point, and guaranteeing this waste can be kept safe for that amount of time would be virtually impossible. Either natural disasters or a terrorist attack could release huge amounts of radioactive waste, with disasterous consequences.
