Unfortunately there is such a thing as canine devocalization. Some people do this to their dogs because they feel that their dog barks too much and they are not willing to put in the training and attention required when taking care of an animal. Some dogs do have a tendency to bark or howl more than others, but canine devocalization is not recommended by many animal rights groups. To perform canine devocalization surgery is required to cut the vocal cords by making an incision in the neck or by going through the oral cavity. The surgery does have some risks which include; problems breathing, trouble swallowing, coughing, and hemorrhaging.
