The Io moth larva is a green caterpillar with spines along its back. It lives in North Dakota, among other places, and has stinging hairs. The best way to avoid poisonous caterpillars is to never pick up or touch hairy or spiny caterpillars.
To treat a caterpillar sting, pull the spines out with a piece of tape and wash the area with soap and water. Baking soda can help to relieve irritation.
