The United States Department of Energy recently awarded ECOtality with $100 million in grant money to develop and implement the electric car charging stations necessary to allow for the introduction of electric vehicles to select markets. The charging stations will be introduced into California, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, and Tennessee to support a pilot program of 1,000 electric vehicles (the Leaf) released by Nissan. The program has a goal of expanding to 5 million vehicles and 12,800 charging stations. ECOtality was selected to receive the funds from the stimulus package money earmarked for advanced battery and vehicle technology.
