There is a net increase in coal plants. World energy demand has continued to grow, and unfortunately for climate change, coal provides much of that energy. This DOE slideshow shows how many new coal plants are in construction: http://www.netl.doe.gov/coal/refshelf/ncp.pdf. Even more alarming is the rate of coal plant growth in China – it is roughly equivalent to one new plant per week. Fortunately, many of these new plants incorporate better filtering technology, but “green coal” is not and never will be a reality, so we need development of renewables to pick up the pace.
