Cedar is an old standby that works great, but many herbs (cloves, fresh rosemary, eucalyptus, lavender, cinnamon sticks and bay leaves) also work great at repelling moths and other bugs. Put them in little cheescloth baggies and tie them to the hangers in your closet.
There are a few natural alternatives to moth balls. The main active ingredient in moth balls, naphthalene, is a known carcinogen, so it is a good idea to use another means to get rid of moths. Specifically, certain mixes of spices can repel moths. For instance, place 2 oz of rosemary, 2 oz of mint, 1 oz dried rosemary, 1 oz ginseng, and 8 oz of whole cloves into a bandana and tie shut. This spice mixture will deter the moths.
