More energy is used in the production rather than transportation of industrially grown beef. The total energy calculation for the production of beef is 1,785 Mcal/animal, whereas the total transportation energy calculation comes to 717 Mcal/animal. This is because the “production” of industrial beef requires corn feed, which itself requires in production and transportation. However, you can’t really have production without transportation, so we really must look at the process as a whole.
