In San Diego, California sewer water is actually being converted into drinking water. The San Diego City Council stated that they hope other drought stricken areas with projected population growth will follow in their footsteps. In many parts of the U.S., it is mandatory that sewer water sit in aquifers for a certain period of time, which prevents recycled water from going directly to tap. This is not uncommon in other developed nations either. However, after going through intense cleansing and purification, recycled water could be used as drinking water.
