Is there a lot of pollution left in the streams in California from gold mining?

In 2001 a U.S. Geological Survey scientist, Charles Alpers, claimed Richmond Mine near Redding, CA, had the world’s worst water.  The water is said to be so acidic it can melt steel.  The main fear of such polluted water is the potential of it leaking into the Sacramento River, a major drinking water source for roughly 80,000 people.
