Currently, yes. There are toxins that can be harmful to the manufacturers as well as powerful greenhouse gases used in the production of Solar Panels. This is because solar panels are made using the same processes as the microelectrics industry, which was never designed to be environmentally friendly. The Washington Post reported in 2008 that at least one plant in China regularly dumps an extremely toxic and corrosive chemical called silicon tetrachloride on farmland, causing agricultural and health problems in the region. Down the line 20-25 years, when the panels that were manufactured using these chemicals need to be disposed of, there is potential for a huge amount of e-waste to be loosed in the environment. The dangers are becoming more known, and we can expect manufacturing and disposal processes will respond accordingly.
