Yes. Africa accounts for roughly 30% of global gold production. South Africa is said to hold 35% of the world’s gold supply. Ghana is the world’s second largest gold producer, putting out about 70 tons of gold per year.
South Africa’s estimated gold reserves are more like 12% of the total, rather than 35%. Ghana is NOT the second largest gold producer in the world, but second in Africa; Ghana ranks about #10 in world production. And South Africa plus Ghana add up to about 13% of world gold production, and with minor other producers in Africa do not come close to 30% of world production.
Leaders in Gold production, in order, are China, Australia, USA, and South Africa, but the latter are in a nearly three-way tie for 2nd place in 2009.
