While leather is commonly thought to be primarily harmful to the environment because it involves the killing of animals, the production of leather causes further harm to the environment during the tanning process. Leather tanning (processing) usually involves the use of harmful chemicals (toxic heavy metals) which are very damaging to the environment if they are not disposed of properly. There is a company that uses a more environmentally friendly tanning process (uses less harmful chemicals) and so can claim to be “green leather”. However, the process still involves killing animals.
