The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) does on the Federal level, and most, if not all, states have a similar statewide agency. There are other federal and state agencies that have spillover effects to help protect our water.
The EPA protects our water through The Clean Water Act (CWA). This act gives the EPA the authority to regulate water bodies in order to protect them. The CWA, passed in 1972, also regulates drinking water to make sure it is safe for the public.
