China’s organic movement is rapidly expanding and is supposedly one of the best in the world. According to a 2007 poll by John Paull, “from 2000 to 2006, China moved from 45th to 2nd position in the world in number of hectares under organic management” (1). China currently has the most organically managed land, 11% of the world’s total.
Yet, Chinese consumers warn that these numbers could be misleading. Organic farmer He Pinru claims, “…not all the so-called organic foods in shops are really organic” (1). Poor food safety is a widespread concern in China. Nevertheless, the organic movement continues to expand, with more farmers joining the effort.
