Is there an estimate of the number of species that go extinct before they ever discovered?

There is no way that we could ever know if a species which we never knew existed is no longer in existence. by looking at the rate in which we discover new species, and comparing that to the rate at which species go extinct we could theoretically develop some estimate but it would not be any where near accuarate.
