In general there is not enough mercury in all fish and shellfish to endanger a pregnant woman. Some fish species have much higher concentrations of mercury in them and should be avoided if pregnant. These include shark, tuna, all bill-fish, king mackerel and other high level predators. This is due to biomagnification, meaning that if a fish is high on the food chain it will sequester a magnified amount of toxins.
There is definitely enough mercury is certain fish that pregnant mothers should avoid at all costs. There is enough mercury in the following to affect brain development in unborn children: grouper, marlin, orange roughy, tilefish, swordfish, shark and mackerel.
