Metal detectors can detect metals close to the surface of the earth. They have many important uses including locating land mines and as a tool in airport security screenings. Hobbyists use them to find things like coins or jewelry.

On a larger scale, there is a branch of science dedicated to finding minerals below the surface of the earth using technology. Exploration geophysics uses seismic, gravitational, magnetic, and other physical methods to find things like minerals, oil, buried gas lines, and even archaeological sites.

There are electronic mapping and mineral detection devices out there that scientists use to create digital images of things below the surface of the Earth. Many of them work by placing a sensory device at certain depths into the ground, and perform scans of the area much in the way an MRI scans a person’s brain. An image is created on a computer screen and sends data back to reveal differences in density and other variables to find useful minerals. This has all but eliminated the need to “just start digging holes” to find valuable minerals. As far as an all-purpose device that simply tells the user what minerals are under the ground at the touch of a button, science still has some ways to go with that.
