You may not be able to stop all of your cat’s hairballs, but you can reduce them by making sure you brush and groom your cat often to remove the loose hair. You can buy a special type of cat food that is known to reduce the occurrence of hairballs and also increase your cat’s water intake. This can help the hair pass more easily through its body. Some suggest placing water bowls in different spots around the house or purchasing a fountain-like water dispenser (since some cats like drinking running water). Others suggest giving your cat a teaspoon of canned pumpkin or a small amount of melted butter once a week. If you think your cat has an unusually high number of hairballs, check with your veterinarian.
