There is much disagreement in the scientific community as to how long Styrofoam takes to decompose. Some pin the number at 500 years, while others believe it will take millions of years. Because styrofoam is artificial and resistant to oxidation, it will not naturally decompose. Exposing it to the elements might allow it to dissolve, but won’t entirely decompose it. Currently, it seems the best option is to recycle styrofoam, though this is a costly process.
