There are a number of preventative measures a woman can take before conceiving a child to prevent premature birth, as well as many other complications and issues. One important step is to get certain illnesses or disorders treated, including diabetes, high blood pressure, seizures, and kidney disease. Leaving these issues untreated before and during pregnancy can cause problems such as increased risk of stillbirth and miscarriage, preeclampsia, insufficient fetal growth progression, birth defects, and premature birth. In addition, as others have answered, taking folic acid supplements has been shown to reduce the risk of a premature delivery.
