Actually the energy infrastructure in the U.S. needs quite a bit of work. The energy grid is actually very outdated, some parts around 100 years old, and made up of a patchwork of independently own segments that are not made to receive energy from many different sources. A smart grid has to be created that links every part of the country allowing renewable to be tapped in and energy to be distributed according to demand so known is wasted. Also the use of smart meters allows people to monitor their own use day by day which could increase consciousness of how energy is being expended.
