No, there are no marine organisms who thrive in the dead zone. There is simply no food or oxygen to sustain sea creatures. Fish and shrimp are sometimes able to escape developing dead zone waters before it makes them unconscious; so long as they aren’t trapped in a lagoon or against the coast. Bottom dwellers such as gastropods, bivalves, starfish, brittle stars, and sea anemones are the first to go. When the Dead Zone begins to shift back to normal levels of oxygen, only a few short lived species are able to survive at first. Polychaete worms are some of the first to come back. Fish tend to congregate around the edges but they do not lead lives within the actual dead zone.
