“Clean burning coal” generally describes any of the measures taken recently to make the burning of coal more environmentally friendly. Coal as a fuel source creates considerable carbon emissions, and creates other types of hazardous gas emissions which contribute to acid rain.
The first clean burning coal facility, the Schwarze Power Pumpe Station, was built in Germany in 2008. The plant captures and reclaims CO2 emissions by compressing them into a liquid state for potential reuse. The harmful sulfides which contribute to acid rain are also collected and separated.
