There are some symptoms associated with inbred dogs that can help diagnose this problem after the dog has been purchased. It would be difficult to tell when buying the dog, however, unless the breeder is honest with you. If dogs have been inbred for generations it is possible that they will have noticeable physical abnormalities. This could include misaligned jaws causing for a poor bite. If much of a breeding program dies of the same infections it is likely that there has been inbreeding in the past, because their immune systems are so similar.
To avoid this problem, do not purchase dogs from puppy farms or breeders. Always adopt from animal shelters. While it’s true that animal shelters may unknowingly offer inbred dogs up for adoption, at least you will know that these dogs received a clean bill of health before being rescued by you.
Most dogs have already been inbred quite a bit haven’t they? Do you know of any breeds that are not as effected by this problem?
Yes, there is quite a bit of inbreeding that has taken place all over the world. Some people even believe that dogs look totally different today than they did 100-150 years ago entirely because of inbreeding. The most commonly inbred dogs are the English bulldog, Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, German Shepherds, etc — basically, all the types of dogs that have a high demand. If you’re buying from a breeder, make sure they have an AKC registered purebred certificate. It helps if the mother and father of the litter are both show dogs as well, as those are less likely to be inbred.
If you are buying from a breeder they should have no problem showing you the lines (ancestors) back several generations. And the puppy should have a clean vet report showing that it has been tested for chronic problems associated with the breed. Most reputable breeders will take back a dog that develops genetic problems which cannot be tested for at the puppy stage. Do your homework and know what to ask before you buy.
