The Rare Breeds Conservation Society of New Zealand has a working gene bank in order out of fear that a natural disaster could wipe species off the map. They call this work “genetic insurance.” They have samples from Enderby cattle, Dexter cattle, Highland cattle, Mesopotamia fallow deer, Boer goats, but are working on several more at the moment as they try to get more funding.
