Is there any link between liver damage and the environment?

Absolutely! Liver damage is not just caused by alcohol consumption. Your liver processes your blood, and any toxins that your body may absorb will pass through your liver. The presence of PCBs has been linked to liver damage…PCBs are a persistent environmental toxin in many areas. Other industrial chemicals have been similarly linked…improper industrial hazardous waste disposal has been strongly indicated in liver problems.

Imagine drinking polluted water in third-world countries and elsewhere that can wreak havoc on a liver trying to process the toxins.  There are links between environmental factors and liver damage all the time.  Knowledge is key though; knowing how to take care of it and teaching others will help prevent liver problems.
