Dirt is more of a common name that encompasses most types of soil, while sand is more specific. Sand, in comparison to other soil types has large particles that are made up of rock and mineral pieces. Dirt is something we use to describe any soil really.
According to this website, “Dirt…contains clay, which sticks to everything,” while sand does not. Sand castles only stick together because of the surface tension of water.
