A small amount of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, can be effectively dealt with through natural processes. For example, carbon dioxide is taken up by plants, which use the carbon in carbon dioxide as building blocks for their cellular structures. In turn, plants release oxygen, which humans and other organisms need to breathe. However, we are releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere faster than it can be processed by marine and land plants, and that is why environmentalists are concerned about global warming and climate change due to a surplus of greenhouse gases.
