In terms of climate change, is it true that the 1990s was named the hottest decade on record?

The hottest decade so far was not the 1990s, but the decade from 2000 to 2009.  Some major media outlets, including the BBC, have reported that the ’90s were in fact the warmest decade recorded – but this is not true.  Unfortunately, a single error on the part of the media can lead to widespread confusion as the fossil fuel industries and global warming deniers pounce on the “evidence” that the world is getting cooler.  Scientific studies clearly show that the planet has grown warmer on average since the 1990s, and if fact that the Earth is heating up at an increasing rate.
