Is natural gas taxed lower than other forms of energy?

In France’s case, natural gas is actually taxed higher than energy but equal to gasoline, diesel fuel, and coal. They are making a move to rid dependence on all forms of anything that releases carbon emissions.

Natural gas in Washington will decrease by about 17% this coming October 2009, but no news on what the tax rates for the other energy forms will be.

Federally on average, in the United States, diesel fuel is taxed highest, then natural gas, then gasoline the lowest. It all ties into demand, emissions regulations, and cost penalties. Natural gas may be moving towards being taxed lower than the rest, but right now gasoline is still taxes the lowest.
