There is far, far more pollution caused in the US by using the oil from the tar sands and everywhere else by burning it in our cars, than is caused in the US by the project itself.
The project is having fairly extreme environmental effects on its immediate area, but as far as I can find out nothing is being reported that directly affects the U.S. That being said, the environmental impact the project has will affect the whole world. For example, producing one barrel of oil from the oil sands produces three times as much greenhouse gases as producing barrel of oil conventionally.
