Is the Tar Sands project in Canada the most damaging project for the environment going on right now?

According to some, yes. The following figures paint a pretty bleak picture. The project converts roughly 90% of the fresh water it uses into a toxic chemical byproduct, filling ponds so big that they can allegedly be seen from space. The amount of natural gas used per day in the process could heat 3 million homes. So, while it would be almost impossible to say whether it truly is the “most damaging,” it is, without question, high on the list.
