Is stone a bad material to build with due to the energy costs and health risks to quarry workers?

Mining natural stone not only poses a threat to the health of miners, but can permanently damage or alter the landscape surrounding the quarries from which it was drawn. However, as a natural material, stone does not put off any noxious fumes other than small amounts of radon, and can easily be sealed against mould. If you’re concerned about its impact, though, products such as IceStone–made from recycled glass and cement–are a much more renewable option, and have many of the same qualities as granite.
