The oil spill off of the coast of Australia released approximately 9 million gallons in the ocean in November 2009. This is one million gallons shy of the Exxon Valdez incident off the coast of Alaska in 1989. Interestingly, these two spills are not even in the top ten largest in history, with the number one slot going to a disastrous 520 million gallon spill in Kuwait in 1991.
