The spectacled caiman (Caiman crocodilus) is a species of crocodile, not a species of alligator. It is the most common of all the crocodile species.
You can tell that the Spectacled Caiman is a crocodile by looking at the teeth. Crocodiles have the alternating and interlocking teeth, while on alligators you can see only the top row of teeth when the mouth is shut.
