The “floating island of trash” in the pacific is roughly twice the size of Texas, and is covered/full of plastic bags. In 2008, a Canadian high school student discovered a way to shorten the degradation period of a plastic bag (which can last more than 1,000 years) to roughly three weeks. Once this advancement can be tailored for offshore plastic decomposition, a major step could be made to decrease the size of the floating trash island.
