According to treehugger.com, the European solar organization PV Cycle is planning to have a solar panel recycling program in place by 2010. This is a new endeavor for the solar industry, because panels last for decades, but with an increase in sales they are expecting “end of life” numbers to rise in the next five to 10 years. The program will turn old panels into new panels, which costs the same as producing panels from scratch, but uses 1/3 of the energy. In their press release, PV Cycle notes that the decision to start the recycling program was voluntary, because no regulations on “end of life” panels are in place as of now.
