Urbanization (the spread and growth of cities) has devastating effects on animal habitats around the world. Building cities requires paving over the natural land and replacing the animal shelters with human ones. These human shelters are permanently destroyed and often require the animals to move to another location (if at all possible).
Also, people are altering natural ecosystems processes that is ruining natural ecosystem processes that plants and animals have become adapted to. For instance, damming rivers and suppressing fires create open niches for invasive species resulting in out competing native species of plants and animals.
