Smog is considered a factor in global warming, which makes the ice melt faster (among other harmful effects on the planet). Human-created greenhouse gases (like smog) trap the heat that is being reflected by Earth’s surface (we get it initially from the sun) by reabsorbing that heat. Greenhouse gases do occur naturally; however, human activity has given these gases a huge boost by pumping more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When the heat is stuck here, it causes the Earth to heat up. When the Earth heats up, the ice in the polar caps melts faster than it naturally would.
