EXPENSIVE BUT GOOD.
It may be expensive to retrofit the entire energy grid with this technology, but it will ultimately save the US from emitting billions of pounds of CO2 each year. In all reality the consumer will end up paying for it when the power companies raise the rates.
To be honest I do not know why these things are not already in place, it kind of seems like a no brainer, but some good changes come slow I guess. Below is more information on the smart grid, what it does, how it helps the environment, etc.
