The mining of silicone has a negative impact on the environment. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of the basic process whereby silicon is prepared from silicon dioxide, but this is a negligible source of atmospheric carbon, compared to the amount generated by combustion of fossil fuels. Those who work in quarries and in the cutting of stone are at risk of silicosis, a lung disease caused by prolonged exposure to silica dust.
